How to resolve smudged or scratched prints on thick paper

  • Scratches or smudges when printing with thick paper.
  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8
  • Printer models:
    • Stylus Photo PX700W, PX710W, PX720WD, PX730WD, PX800FW, PX810FW, PX820FWD, PX830FWD

Depending on weight, thickness and flexibility of media your printer may have issues feeding certain types of paper. Due to the nature of a front paper feed mechanism, you may experience issues with the printer misfeeding or jamming thick paper types. Although Epson can only support paper types within the printer's specifications, we can offer some advice that may allow your printer to feed these paper types correctly. Follow the instructions below for assistance:

Windows XP/Vista/7

The example used in this article is the Stylus Photo PX710W, using Windows Vista. The screens shown may vary slightly with different versions of Windows and printer models.

  1. Open the Printers and Faxes, Printers or Devices and Printers (see How to open the Printers or Printers and Faxes folder in Windows for help doing this).

  2. Right-click on your printer and click Printing Preferences.

  3. Click into the Maintenance tab along the top of the Printing Preferences screen.

  4. Click on Printer and Option Information button.

  5. Tick the Thick paper and envelopes box and click OK.

  6. This will enable the printer to accept thicker paper, allowing the paper to pass through the printer more freely. This should resolve any smudges or scratches on printouts.
