Explanation of the 'Ad hoc' and 'Infrastructure' mode wireless (Wi-Fi) connection methods

To select the correct wireless environment when setting-up your printer, refer to the information below as an introduction to network connections.

Infrastructure Mode (where a wireless access point/router is used)

A wireless access point/router is required for infrastructure wireless networking. To join the Wireless LAN, the access point and all wireless clients must be configured to use the same SSID (network name). The access point is then cabled to the wired network to allow wireless clients access to, for example, Internet connections or printers. Additionally, the IP address for each network device can be obtained automatically from the wireless access point.

Recommended use: Home or business networks with computers that connect to the Internet via a wireless router and send data for print jobs over the network to the Epson wireless device, while remaining connected to the Internet.

In the Infrastructure mode, both wireless and wired computers can communicate through an access point (such as wireless router) to send data to the network interface.

Hardware necessary for infrastructure mode
    a. Printer (this product)
    b. Wireless router (or access point)
    c. Computer with wireless LAN interface (built-in or added via USB/PC card and so on)
    d. Computer with LAN port or wireless LAN interface
    e. LAN cable (if you connect the computer and the wireless router directly)
    (f. Internet access)

Setup requirements:
  • SSID*
  • Security/Encryption Key*
  • IP address (Only manual setup method is available)

    *It is possible to set these using AOSS and WPS. Set by pushing a button on the Access Point (Buffalo Technology's Access Points/wireless cards only).

Conditions required for a successful wireless network connection:

In order to successfully set up your wireless Epson device and connect each computer on an infrastructure network to it, each device must be configured to use the same SSID (network name) and wireless network key/password.

Caution Icon Caution:

The SSID and Security/Encryption Key are both case sensitive. If any upper and lower case text is not entered correctly, it will not be accepted and you will not be able to connect. Also, connection will not be possible if the security level (e.g. 64-bit WEP, 128-bit WEP) is incorrect.


Ad hoc mode (where an access point/router is not used) - wireless network

On wireless computer networks, Ad hoc mode is a method for wireless devices to directly communicate with each other. Operating in Ad hoc mode allows all wireless devices within range of each other to discover and communicate peer-to-peer. A wireless access point/router is not required. For Ad hoc mode to function correctly, each network device will need to have an IP address set manually.

Recommended use: For users that not have a wireless router, e.g. to connect to the Internet, but require wireless printing to the Epson device from a wireless-enabled computer.

To use the printer in a wireless environment without an access point (wireless router, etc.), Ad Hoc mode must be used.

Hardware necessary for Ad Hoc mode:
    a. Printer/All-In-One (your Epson product)
    b. Computer with a wireless LAN interface (built-in or added via USB/PC card and so on)

Setup requirements:
  • SSID (name you will give your ad hoc network when you create it)
  • Security/Encryption Key
  • IP address (only manual setup method is available, it cannot be set automatically).
