If the printer has failed to respond to a print command, the port in the properties of the printer driver may not have been configured correctly. We recommend that you first follow the troubleshooting guidance in the following Related Article and then return to this article if instructed to.
If you are using a printer via a FireWire (Windows ME only) or USB connection and receive an error message such as "There was an error writing to LPT1", the printer driver port is set incorrectly. Follow the instructions below to set the driver to use the correct port and resolve the error.
FireWire support is only available in Windows ME.
For USB printers, your computer must be a Windows 98SE or ME pre-installed model, or a Windows 98 pre-installed model that was upgraded to Windows ME. You may not be able to install or run the USB printer driver on a computer that does not meet these specifications, or that is not equipped with a built-in USB port. Microsoft does not provide USB 2.0 driver support for Windows 98SE and ME; this is provided by the manufacturer of the USB chipset. For earlier systems such as this, USB 2.0 connectivity is not pre-installed, but can be added with a PCI card. Please be advised we cannot support PCI cards if it does not detect the device.
Windows 95, NT4, or Windows 98 (First Edition) do not have full USB support, full support was introduced with the Second Edition (SE) of Windows 98. Only Windows 98SE and later systems feature USB support, therefore our drivers will only work with the fully implemented USB support under the supported operating systems.
If you are attempting to use your Epson printer via USB on Windows 95, NT4, or Windows 98 (First Edition) and the printer has a Parallel port, we recommend using this instead. As FireWire support is only available in Windows ME, if you are using an earlier operating system please change the connection to a supported interface type.
Check that the printer is set to the correct printer port for the interface being used:
If any port setting in the list is followed by 'Unknown Local Port', this will have to be removed in order to install and use the printer.

If the correct port setting is listed and is selected in the Details tab, then attempt to print a Test Page by clicking on the General tab, then Print Test Page:
If the correct port is not displayed, e.g. the port is set to LPT1 when it should be USB, attempt to change the port.
Do not click 'Add Port' as this may cause problems with the system - only select a port that is available in the list.
If any port is listed with Unknown Local Port beside it, a user has tried to create and add this port to make the printer work. An Unknown Local Port must be deleted, but not from within the Details tab.

If the printer is connected to the computer via USB or FireWire and the port setting you require is not listed then for USB printers, check that the computer system supports USB, and for FireWire printers, check that the computer system supports FireWire.
