Mac OS X: How to cancel printing and open the Print Queue

Relates to

  • Mac OS X
  • Deleting print jobs or the print queue in Mac OS X
  • Resuming print jobs or the print queue in Mac OS X
  • Resuming the printer in Mac OS X

You can access the print queue either when a print job is printing from the status window, via the Epson printer icon in the Dock, or via the Print Center (10.2), Printer Setup Utility (10.3, 10.4), Print & Fax (10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6), Print & Scan (10.7, 10.8) or Printers & Scanners (10.9, 10.10, 10.11).

You may want to access the print queue for several reasons, for example to:

  • Delete a print job.
  • Hold (pause) a print job.
  • Resume a print job.
  • Stop jobs (pause the printer) or start jobs (resume the printer)
  • Check the status of the printer or print jobs when a print attempt fails and an error message is displayed e.g. "Jobs Stopped".

If your printer has a Stop/Ink, Stop or Paper/Bin button, press this button while printing to cancel the printing of a print job.

To cancel/pause/resume jobs listed in the print queue, follow the instructions for your version of Mac OS X:

Mac OS X Puma (10.1), Jaguar (10.2)

  1. To access the print queue click on the Print Center icon in the Dock. Alternatively, open the Print Center from /Applications/Utilities. Click on Printers > Show Printer List. The Printer List appears.

Troubleshooting: You have received an error message

If you have received one of the following error messages, see the steps that follow:

"Printer's queue is stopped. Really print?" (Clicking OK does not start the print queue.)

"Printing of jobs for this printer is stopped. Do you want to continue and restart the printing of jobs?"

Starting the print queue may allow jobs to print. Follow the instruction appropriate for your version of Mac OS X 10.2:

Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later:

If you see the message above, click Continue. If your job does not print, follow the steps for Mac OS X 10.2.2 below.

      Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.2.2:
      1. Open Print Center (\Applications\Utilities).
      2. Click on Printers then Show Printer List.
      3. Click on your printer to highlight it.
      4. Click on Printers then Start Jobs. The printer should resume printing the jobs. If not, move to Step 5.
      5. If the queue stops immediately after being started, check the printer is powered on and check its connection to the computer (such as the USB or Firewire cable). One of the following factors may stop the printer from being able to accept or complete a print job:
        • Paper feed issues
        • Ink tanks that are empty, improperly installed, or misaligned.
        • Loose connections or damaged cables.

      6. Look for a status in the print window. Try to Delete jobs then restart the Mac and try to print again.

      7. If this fails see article Troubleshooting printer installation and communication issues in Mac OS X v. 10.1 - 10.3 for assistance with isolating the issue.
