Description
This article covers noise heard specifically during the initial ink fill when setting up a new printer — not noise during a routine top-up refill later in the printer's life. The first time a new EcoTank or ink tank printer is filled with ink, it needs to charge its print head before it can print. This process can take some time and is expected to produce some noise.
Symptoms
- You've just set up a new printer and filled its ink tanks for the first time, and the printer is making noise
- The print head appears to be moving, or the printer sounds like it's working, for an extended period after initial setup
- The printer's ink light stays on after the initial fill
Solution
Let the print head charging process finish
The first time you fill the tanks with ink, the printer must charge its print head. Wait until charging finishes before you turn the printer off — turning it off early can cause it to charge improperly and use excess ink the next time it's turned on.
Note: The printer has finished charging the print head when the power light stops flashing. If the ink light is still on, charging may not be complete yet — keep waiting rather than turning the printer off.
If the printer stops moving or making noise before charging finishes
If this happens and charging hasn't finished after around 20 minutes:
- Turn the printer off.
- Turn it back on and check whether charging is still in progress.
- If charging is still in progress, contact Epson for help.
