How to find a wireless password on Windows and Mac

If you have forgotten the wireless password for the network that you are connected too, please follow the instructions below:





Note:

You must have entered the password and "Joined" the wireless network before to be able to find the password using this method.



  1. Click on the Windows Start Button


  2. In the search box type CMD (for command prompt)



  3. Right click on the Command Prompt Program and select Run as administrator



  4. When the command prompt window opens, type the following command: netsh wlan show profiles



  5. The names of all the Wi-Fi networks you have connected too in the past are displayed in a list, find your wireless network name in the list (it is possible that only one entry will be shown). For this example, we will display the password for the “Wi-Fi network



  6. To do this, type the following command: netsh wlan show profile name="Wi-Fi network" key=clear
    Note:

    Replace Wi-Fi network with the name of your Wi-Fi network. (The information gathered in step 5)




  7. The wireless password will be shown under the Security settings menu, and the description is Key Content



  1. If you are using a MAC OS X system open a Terminal window.
    • At the command line try the following command: security find-generic-password -wa Wi-Fi network

    Note:

    Replace "Wi-Fi network" with the name of your Wi-Fi network.


  2. In the top right of the screen you can see a Wi-Fi icon, if you are connected to any of the wireless networks you will see a tick next to it.



  3. Using spotlight, type terminal and then click on the terminal application in the list to open it.



  4. In the terminal window type the following command: security find-generic-password -wa Wi-Fi Network

  5. Note:

    Replace "Wi-Fi network" with the name of your Wi-Fi network.




  6. You will be asked to provide your Mac Username and Password to authorise the terminal command



  7. The wireless password is displayed on the next line in the terminal window
