Am I running a 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Windows?

Windows comes in two distinct versions designed to support computers with either 32-bit or 64-bit hardware. This means that there will often be different drivers required for each version.

Expand the section below depending on your version of Windows you are using to determine if it is 32-bit or 64-bit version you are running.

Windows 10

Right hand click the Start button and left click on System

In the window that opens, locate System type. This will indicate either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system.

Windows 8

  1. Move the mouse cursor to the bottom or top-right of the screen and click the Search icon (highlighted below) from the menu that appears.


  2. Type Control panel in the Search bar and press Enter.

  3. Open System and Security then System (Category View) or click on the System icon (Small/Large icons View).

  4. In the window that opens, locate System type. This will indicate either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system.

Windows 7

  1. Click on Start, and then Control Panel.

  2. Open System and Security then System (Category View) or double-click on the System icon (Classic View).

  3. In the window that opens, locate System type. This will indicate either a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system.

Windows Vista

  1. Click on Windows Start menu button Start, and then Control Panel.

  2. Double-click on the System icon.

  3. In the window that opens, locate System type. This will indicate either 32-bit or 64-bit.
