How to install an inbox driver on Windows XP

RELATES TO:

  • Windows 2000/XP
  • Inbox Drivers
  • Dot Matrix and listed inkjet printers

EXPLANATION:

What is an inbox driver?

An inbox driver is a driver supplied with an operating system rather than being provided by the device's manufacturer on a website or software CD. In Windows XP there are inbox drivers already available as well as ESC/P2 drivers.

Note:

Inbox and ESC/P2 drivers are Microsoft drivers and have not been produced by Epson. In the event of of any issues, please uninstall the driver from Add or Remove Programs or delete the printer from the Printers and Faxes folder. Then, try installing the printer driver again.

See How to uninstall a printer on Windows 2000 and XP for instructions on doing this.

Is there an inbox driver available for my product?

The best way to determine how your product is supported in Windows XP is to check the Epson Support site to see if there is a compatible Windows XP driver available. If there is no driver available you can then browse the list of inbox drivers available on your PC from the Add Printer Wizard, as shown below.

Note:

Whilst ESC/P2 drivers support the majority of earlier Epson printers, they will have the following restrictions:

  • The maximum print resolution is 720dpi.
  • Ink levels will not be monitored.
  • Limited paper type selection.
  • Print Preview not available in the driver settings. However you can still use Print Preview in the application/program.

For the Epson Stylus Color 300 this driver only allows printing in black. The printer will still require all cartridges to be installed and not expended.

How to install an inbox driver

  1. Connect the printer to the appropriate port on your computer according to the printer's documentation and verify that it is ready to print.

  2. Although Windows automatically detects and installs most printers, you might need to provide additional information to complete the installation. Choose from the following, depending on the type of printer you have:

    Install a parallel (LPT) printer

If your printer connects to your computer with a parallel port (LPT).

    1. Connect the printer to your computer and power it on.
    2. Open Printers and Faxes. Click Start > Printers and Faxes or Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
    3. Click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.

    4. Select Local Printer, make sure the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer check box is selected, and then click Next.

    5. The computer will search for recently added hardware.

    6. Depending on the printer you are installing, a Found New Hardware message or the Found New Hardware Wizard appears to notify you that the printer has been detected and that the installation has begun.

    7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the printer installation. If you receive the following window click Continue Anyway.

    8. If the Found New Hardware wizard does not start then restart your computer to allow it to automatically detect the printer.

    9. Once installation is complete the printer icon will be added to your Printers and Faxes folder.

Install a USB or Firewire (IEEE 1394) printer

If your printer connects to your computer with a universal serial bus (USB) or Firewire (IEEE 1394) cable, follow the below instructions:

    1. Connect your printer to your computer and power it on.
    2. Windows XP detects the printer and automatically starts the Found New Hardware Wizard. You do not need to shut down or restart your computer, follow the instructions on the screen to finish the setup.

    3. The printer icon will be added to your Printers and Faxes folder.

If you are not able to install your printer using Plug and Play, or if the printer is attached to your computer with a serial (COM) port please follow the instructions below.

  1. Open Printers and Faxes then click Start > Printers and Faxes or Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
  2. Click Add Printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.

  3. The Add Printer Wizard will start. Click Next to continue.

  4. Click Local printer, remove the tick from Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer then click Next.

  5. Select the port required and click Next.

  6. Ensure you select Epson as the manufacturer and the correct model of printer then click Next.

  7. The next window will enable you to rename your printer if you choose. Set the printer as default then click Next.

  8. Make your selection for printer sharing then click Next.

  9. Choose if you would like to print a Test page then click Next.

  10. If you receive the following window click Continue Anyway.

  11. Click Finish to complete the Add Printer Wizard.

Note:

If you add a Plug-and-Play printer (for example, USB, Firewire (IEEE 1394) or Parallel (LPT)), you do not need to have administrative privileges. However, to add and set up a non-Plug-and-Play printer connected directly to your computer, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.
