I want to create a CD/DVD label in Print CD using an image scanned by my Epson Scanner/All-In-One. When I select TWAIN in the Background dialog, I see the message "TWAIN Source Open Error" or "Cannot communicate with the scanner".

RELATES TO:

  • EPSON Print CD
  • Scanning directly into Print CD
  • Error messages

EXPLANATION:

EPSON Print CD allows you to create an image or label to print directly onto an inkjet printable CD/DVD. After you create the CD/DVD label data, you can print on 12-cm CD/DVD and 8-cm CD/DVD with compatible Epson printers.

You can select a personal image to display on your cover. Accessing the Background menu allows you to choose between different styles of backgrounds for your CD/DVDs. There are three different styles of background you can select to use on your cover: colour, gradation or an image. You can choose between three possible ways to import your image: from your hard drive (e.g. "My Pictures"), from your clipboard (using copy and paste), or you can import a scanned image directly from your scanner by clicking the TWAIN button.

If you have clicked on the TWAIN button and received one of the messages below, you will need to check the TWAIN settings in Print CD.

TWAIN Source Open Error Cannot communicate with the scanner EPSON Scan cannot be started

Notes Icon Note:
  • Only click the TWAIN button if you want to import a scanned image directly from a scanner or All-In-One.

  • If you do not have a scanner, All-In-One or any other TWAIN-compliant device connected to your computer, you will be unable to use the TWAIN import option and must import a background image by using one of the other methods described above.

  • Examples of other TWAIN-compliant devices include digital webcams and digital cameras.

SOLUTION:

Before you attempt to import an image directly from a scanner/All-In-One, first check that the scanner/All-In-One is powered on and communication is possible between the Epson device and the computer. If you continue to receive an error, check the TWAIN settings in Print CD.

Check the TWAIN settings in Print CD

Do the following:

  1. In Print CD, click on the File menu and select TWAIN Settings.

  2. The Select Source dialog appears. The default source may be set to a different TWAIN-compliant device such as a webcam, third-party scanner/All-In-One, EPSON TWAIN or a different Epson scanner/All-In-One model. You must select the source correct for your Epson scanner/All-In-One.

Check the Sources list carefully as several models may be listed on the same line e.g. 'EPSON Artisan710/PX710/TX710'. Use the following as a guide:

    • If you are using an Epson scanner or All-In-One that uses EPSON TWAIN, click on "EPSON TWAIN" in the menu to highlight it.

    • If you are using an Epson scanner or All-In-One that uses EPSON Scan, click on your specific Epson model in the menu to highlight it e.g. 'EPSON Perfection 4490', 'EPSON Stylus Photo PX710W'. Then click Select.

    • If you are using a scanner or All-In-One by a different manufacturer, select the source as appropriate and then click Select. See your manufacturer's documentation if it does not appear here or if you continue to receive a Twain Source Open Error.

  3. Once you have highlighted your source choice, click Select to set it as the default and return to the EPSON Print CD window. When you next select TWAIN as the method of importing an image into Print CD, it will attempt to open the TWAIN source (driver/device) you selected.

    Notes Icon Note:

Print CD will use this selection as the default TWAIN source setting for all subsequent TWAIN import commands unless you change the source in the TWAIN Settings again.

Import an image directly from a scanner or All-In-One

After making the TWAIN Settings, attempt to import an image directly from your Epson scanner/All-In-One again. Make sure the original image that you wish to scan is positioned on the scanner bed, then do the following:

  1. Open a new, blank template. Click on Selection then select CD/DVD Label.

  2. Click on Background. The Select Background dialog box opens.

  3. Click on TWAIN. Your scanning software opens - for an Epson scanner/All-In-One, this will be either EPSON TWAIN or EPSON Scan dialog box.

  4. Your scanning software may start and complete the scan automatically, importing it into Print CD. The automatic mode of EPSON Scan or EPSON TWAIN is often sufficient for most scanning jobs, however the Manual (EPSON TWAIN) or Home/Professional (EPSON Scan) modes offer more options and user control over the settings and final scanned result. You can crop your scanned image, make any other adjustments or document and image settings, and preview the image before performing the final scan and importing it into Print CD.

You continue to receive an error when attempting to scan

Follow the steps below if you continue to receive an error message when you click the TWAIN button to import an image directly from a scanner, All-In-One, or other TWAIN-compliant device:

  1. Check that the device is powered on and ready to scan, displaying no errors.

  2. Check that communication is possible between the device and the computer. If the device is connected to the computer via a USB, FireWire or SCSI cable, check the cable connection is secure at both ends.

  3. Check that scanning is possible with the standard software supplied with your scanner, independent of the Print CD program.
    • EPSON TWAIN requires a TWAIN-compliant application to import the scans into. Examples of TWAIN-compliant applications include EPSON Smart Panel, EPSON Creativity Suite, EPSON Event Manager and Adobe Photoshop.

    • EPSON Scan can be used without a TWAIN-compliant application - try opening it directly from the Desktop icon. EPSON Scan can also be accessed from the Programs/All Programs menu (Windows), or Applications (Mac OS X).
