Igloo Vision - Case Study

Igloo Vision relies on the Epson EB-L1105U Laser Projectors for breath-taking shared VR experiences

As a provider of dedicated, 360-degree shared virtual reality (VR) projection spaces, Igloo Vision’s success is founded on its ability to create fully immersive experiences that amaze and delight in equal measure.

The company is aware that, although today’s VR headsets are able to deliver a great experience, the obvious limitation is that it tends to be a solitary one. In comparison, Igloo’s range of immersive projection domes and cylinders provide shared VR experiences that are perfect for events, training purposes and collaborative engagements.

High demands

One of the main issues facing Igloo is that these experiences can only work if the technology involved is reliable and provides the best possible picture quality.

Igloo’s eye-catching 12.5-metre dome uses five projectors to display VR content of practically any format, with the company’s proprietary software stitching everything together to create one seamless display.

Use cases are split into three broad areas: experiences, such as brand engagement events; simulations, such as training environments for the likes of the military and emergency services; and visualisations which are commonly used by architecture or construction companies.

To best execute these different scenarios and satisfy high-profile clients such as Adidas, Toyota and Smirnoff, Igloo required a projector solution that provided the optimum blend of affordability and image quality.

Another key factor was reliability. Clients pay significant sums of money to put on these experiences and, with capacity for more than 200 people in the 12.5-metre dome, reliability was key.

This is where Epson’s range of projectors came in, showing an ability to solve both challenges at once.

Laser focus

Igloo selected a device which is perfectly suited to large venues - the Epson EB-L1105U Laser Installation Projector - as the standard projection solution for its 12.5 metre dome.

Along with superior image quality, the EB-L1105U offers low-maintenance performance and flexible positioning, thanks to a new range of motorised lenses that allow the projector to be placed virtually anywhere without any image distortion.

“We had heard lots of good things about Epson’s new laser installation projectors so we got some in to evaluate and it was almost a no-brainer to use them in our large structures. They delivered exactly what we wanted,” said Peter Halliday, head of communications at Igloo.

All the thrills, with no awkward spills

The Epson EB-L1105U laser installation projector provides a greater degree of reliability than Igloo’s previous projection solution, ensuring that the only surprises to appear are positive ones. Clients can focus on enjoying the immersive Full HD projections and studio-quality soundscapes without having to worry about technological failures.

Not only that, the image quality is also significantly improved due to Epson’s 3LCD technology, serving to enhance the experience for Igloo and its customers. “The great thing about the projectors is the constant brightness and colour accuracy,” added Peter Halliday,
Head of Communications at Igloo Vision.

“For all of our work, we do image warping and edge-blending via at least five projectors, so any variations in brightness and colour accuracy really show. In the past, with lamp projectors, we'd spend a lot of time on calibration but, with the new Epson laser projectors and their in-built cameras, this process is quicker and simpler.

“Laser projectors have traditionally delivered on quality and reliability but, for a company like ours, the up-front costs have been prohibitive.  Now that's starting to change.”

But Igloo isn’t stopping with the 12.5 metre dome. It also has 6-metre and 9-metre versions which are more frequently used. The company now plans to incorporate a greater range of Epson projectors into these solutions as new features are released and the price-quality-reliability equation continues to improve.

That way, customers of every Igloo solution get to enjoy a top-of-the-range shared VR experience – powered by Epson technology – that will take their breath away.
