Things are looking up for the environment – at least on paper. Representatives from 175 countries signed the Paris climate accord at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Germany has enacted reforms to public procurement, better defining eco-friendly strategies in public institutions. Sustainability in the minds of businesses has gone from consideration to critical.
“The era of consumption without consequences is over,” said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “We are in a race against time.” And to stand a chance at winning, every part of the economy that uses precious resources needs to change fundamentally, and without delay.
Our place in sustainability
Changes are already in full swing – but new policies dictated by governments can’t faze companies that have already made sustainability a guiding principle. At Epson, we work with some of the best of them.
The justice ministry of the federal state of Niedersachsen in Germany, for example, is one of many government institutions that have decided to make their IT infrastructure more environmentally friendly. When they had to order new printers, the justice ministry was looking for ultra-low energy consumption, and ultimately chose to buy 4,000 of our WorkForce Pro inkjet printers. The Bavarian tax office followed suit and ordered 12,000 of their own.
Renewing business strategies
But it’s about more than saving energy due to external pressures. The smartest companies are also aware of the incentive to reduce consumption based on high energy prices.
Going back to Germany, the Energiewende Policy has introduced the goal of reducing German electricity consumption by 50% below 2008 levels by 2050, and CO2 emissions by 50% below 1990 levels by 2020. With some of the highest energy prices in Europe, Germany has little choice but to draw from more renewable energy sources.
But ultimately, it all comes down to how fast the world’s biggest polluters – the US and China – can adapt to this demand for change, too. Germany may be blazing the trail, but for many other countries, this may be a waiting game.
