A high street revolution – the personalised print experience

There is a revolution taking place on the high street and it’s being driven by the ability of today’s digital inkjet printers to print photos, artwork and designs not just onto paper but onto lots of other materials. There is virtually no limitation to what we can print on today – metal, textile, wall coverings, wood, plastic and much more.

As a result, we can now personalise more and more aspects of our environment and it’s catching on! Shops on the high street, designers and online entrepreneurs are increasingly exploring new creative ideas and developing new businesses built on producing a huge variety of added-value personalised products.

In my view, the evolution of high street printing services has come in two waves: the ‘First Wave’ started with photo and fine art canvasses as well as paper-based products such as photobooks, calendars, and cards. Now we are seeing the start of an exciting ‘Second Wave’ where we don’t just want to order or print our own photos or artwork, we also want to be much more creative with our images.  As well as familiar promotional products such as mugs, phone cases, and tablet covers etc, we can now buy all types of personalised clothes, such as t-shirts, flip flops, hats and bags.

Now, interior décor is the new frontier being opened up by the capabilities of digital inkjet printing. Curtains, blinds, wall coverings, upholstery, cushions, beanbags, ceramic tiles, tables, chairs, home entertainment systems – in fact any plastic, MDF or metal surfaces – all offer possibilities for individual designs.

This capability translates into a huge opportunity. But what do these innovative businesses need? They want to react quickly to their customers’ needs and they need short-run production solutions that are affordable, easy-to-use, flexible and reliable.
