Environmental Vision 2050: How we’re playing our part

At Epson, we work by several highly-ambitious, landmark environmental targets. This is because we recognise that the earth’s capacity is limited, and believe that everyone must share responsibility for reducing their ecological impact equally, according to their ability to do so. Our targets are laid out in our Environmental Vision 2050 – a business plan that will help to guide the company over the next three and a half decades. By the year 2050, we aim to have:

  1. Reduced CO2 emissions by 90% across all our products’ lifecycles.
  2. Ensured that all our products are part of the resource, reuse and recycling loop.
  3. Eliminated use of harmful gas emissions, other than CO2 , within our products.

In order to ensure we’re on track to achieve these goals by 2050, we also set two medium-term goals – the SE15 Corporate Vision, which ran from 2009-15, and Epson 25 Corporate Vision, which runs until 2025. These milestones enable us to be realistic about what we’re achieving, and empower us to tweak our approach where necessary. Under SE15, we created a number of new environmental efficiencies, making it a huge success – and we’re confident that Epson 25 and Epson 50 will follow suit.

Four pillars for a sustainable future

There are four areas for focus that we established during SE15, which remain a key part of our strategy for a brighter environmental future. They are:

  • New perspective
  • Products
  • Production
  • Eco community

The first of these, new perspective, means going beyond reducing the environmental impact of existing solutions – and proposing new products, services, functions and uses that change the behaviour and businesses of customers. In doing so, we contribute to the development of a sustainable society by using our technology to reduce the environmental impact of our products and services across their life cycles and supply chains.

By using technology to fundamentally alter and improve the way we do things, we’re capable of dramatically reducing our impact on the planet. This requires innovation, foresight, and understanding – values which we are proud to hold.

At the same time, we continue to improve the environmental efficiency of our existing products. Our second area of focus empowers us to re-create compelling, customer-pleasing technology, with a 50% lower impact across its lifecycle. Primarily, this is achieved by making our solutions smaller and lighter, reducing their power requirements, designing them for easy recycling, and extending their service life.

The third crucial aspect of our mid-term vision is production – the way we make our products. We strive to develop resourceful, low-impact production processes, in conjunction with programs that reduce total costs, and raise quality.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, our fourth area of focus: eco community. By utilising environmental community action – centred on our products and services – Epson aims to achieve new socially and economically-sustainable practices. That means working with communities and users to create solutions that are kinder to the environment, and fit in seamlessly with the everyday lives of users.

These four areas of focus continue to play a large part in our quest to realise our future ambitions. Our next milestone, Epson 25 will see a new connected age of people, things and information with efficient, compact and precision technologies. By helping to free people from repetitive manual work and from unnecessary wastes of effort and time, Epson aims to heighten people’s creativity, and create a sustainable society in which people enjoy safe and healthy lifestyles.

ICT plays a key role in sustainability

Meanwhile, advances in information and communications technology will mean increasing amounts of information will become available on the internet, causing cyber space to continuously expand. As a company that specialises in generating value in the real world, we will refine our technology, and work with IT companies to increase the value of the technology we provide to customers. Contributing to the development of a sustainable society by reducing the environmental impact of our products and services across their lifecycles, we’re playing a central role in this vision of the future.

Specifically, there are four product areas where we will drive innovation, and help realise the vision of Epson 25. These are:

  • inkjet innovation,
  • visual innovation,
  • wearables innovation, and
  • robotics innovation.

Our revolutionary low-energy, low-wastage inkjet technology is already reducing the ecological footprint of thousands of our customers, while our interactive projectors empower people to enjoy all the benefits of a face to face meeting, without the environmental impact of travelling. What’s more, our wearable technology is bridging the gap between the online and offline spaces – allowing users to enjoy an in-store experience, from the comfort of their own home.

From our production process to our thinking process, and from product lifespans to community action, we’re edging ever closer to playing a central part in the connected, efficient and compact future that we envisage. By harnessing a collaborative approach, and combining it with our particular area of expertise – technological development – we can make steady progress and achieve the goals of Epson 25, and then those of the Environmental Vision 2050. Together, we will make a change. The future of our planet depends on it.
