Rediscovering the technology ‘wow’ factor

There’s so much that’s fascinating to me about medicine and the human body. I feel it’s an instinctive curiosity driven by thousands of years of human struggles and survival.

One of the most amazing things about technology is how easily we take it for granted on occasion. It’s a sign of how well integrated into our daily lives items like washing machines, refrigerators, TVs, smart phones and printers have become.

Healthcare technology is harder to take for granted because it saves lives. Today technology plays a vital role in healthcare globally, from diagnostics, treatment and patient care to hospital security and data management and its impact is wide-ranging.

While this blog isn’t going to be a platform for touting our wares, I do just want to shout about some truly exiting ways our Moverio smart glasses are being used in the medical field.

Mapping veins under the skin

Evena Medical’s adaptation of our Moverio smart glasses are playing an amazing and unexpected role in enabling the visibility of, and accuracy in targeting, the network of blood vessels in the body. The Eyes-On TM Glasses System is the first vein detection device to deliver clear, anatomically accurate, real-time imaging in a wearable, easy-to-use, hands-free and cart-free system and allows nurses to ‘see through’ a patient’s skin by overlaying an image of the patient’s vasculature using augmented reality.  This enables nurses to quickly and easily locate and access the best veins for each patient – even in challenging clinical environments such as pediatric or neonatal units – to make one precise injection, importantly enhancing patient treatment, comfort and care.

Helping to target tumours

Similarly, the Moverio platform is also being used in UniversitätsSpital Zürich – the main hospital in the Swiss capital. In this instance the Moverio is being used to help improve the accuracy of CT scans used to determine the position and size of a tumour. As the CT scans are used as reference data for radiotherapy treatment, it is extremely important to get as accurate an idea as possible of the position and extent of a tumour because only in this way can the tumour be targeted with precision and as much healthy tissue be protected as possible.

One challenge of a CT scan is the elimination of patient movement caused by breathing during the CT scan process. For this reason, patient participation is key in order to keep breathing even and by using the Moverio to display an image of this movement for the patient to see, they are better equipped to control their breath depth and pattern and ultimately the CT image accuracy.

It’s fair to say that technology is being used in some exciting and unique ways within the medical industry, and it’s to be hoped that this is a trend that continues to prove both progressive and valuable.
