Epson and World Cup Skiing

November 18 2003

Epson is the Official Timing and Results Service Partner of the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country and Nordic Combined World Cups.

Epson's support ensures that every competitor's performance is accurately measured and that these precise results are promptly distributed to the world's media.

For the FIS World Cup Cross-Country and Nordic Combined events, Epson provides timing systems, data services, commentator information systems and computer hardware.

Founded with only 14 member nations in February 1924 during the first Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France, the International Ski Federation (FIS) now encompasses 101 national ski associations.

Cross-Country skiing originated in the northern European countries and its origins - as a mode of transport during harsh winters in Scandinavia and Russia - can be traced back as far as 5,000 years. Up to 90 female and 100 skiers compete in the top-level FIS World Cup races, which include 12-to-16 individual and 6-to-8 relay events.

As its name suggests, "Nordic Combined" is a multi-discipline event comprising a ski jumping competition and a cross-country skiing race. The World Cup includes both individual and team events, in which competitors jump from various heights and contest cross-country courses of varying distances.
