Epson REVEALS WORLD'S SMALLEST INKJET DROPLET
Epson UK Ltd today announces the launch of three new innovative inkjet printers, which will once again demonstrate the companies clear leadership in the inkjet market, by introducing leading technologies.
The Stylus Color 740 (£232) is targeted at sophisticated, demanding home and SoHo users. The Stylus Color 740 delivers a significant advance in Epson's MicroPiezo technology, the cornerstone of the PerfectPicture Imaging System* producing the remarkable print quality and performance delivered by Epson colour inkjet printers, and prints at 1440dpi. Advanced MicroPiezo is a major enhancement of the technology responsible for the precise size, shape and placement of each ink droplet, including Epson Ultra MicroDot and Variable-sized Droplet Technology.
This new Epson Ultra MicroDot is the smallest ink droplet from any inkjet available today, at only 6 picolitre in volume; the Ultra MicroDot is 55 per cent smaller than the current Super MicroDot used by the Stylus Color 600 which is 13 picolitre.
The Stylus Color 740 is also the very first printer to use Epson Variable-sized Droplet Technology, which exploits three different sizes of ink droplet in the same document, including the Ultra MicroDot. This achieves 6ppm in Black and/or in colour, representing and increase of 40 per cent faster print speed over the Stylus Color 600.
In addition to the usual interfaces the Stylus Color 740 will include the USB interface for Windows 98 and Apple's iMac (due to launch on September 1st).
Robert Clark, Epson UK's Product Marketing Manager said, "The printers announced today follow on from the phenomenal success of the Stylus Color 600 - the UK's best selling colour inkjet printer. By building on the strengths of the Stylus Color 600 with unique technological features, ease-of-use and software bundles Epson once again should lead the inkjet market."
Offering the ideal solution for a broad range of home applications the Stylus Color 640, provides 1440dpi quality printing, and is priced at £174. Several improvements have been made in the printer mechanism resulting in faster print speeds. This four-colour inkjet printer prints up to 5 ppm in black and up to 4 ppm in colour, and with its dual black and colour ink cartridges it requires no cartridge swapping.
The Stylus Color 640 incorporates Epson PhotoEnhance 3, which automatically optimises colour output, and enhances the quality of Web graphics or other digital images. Designed exclusively for Windows, the Stylus Color 640 also comes with free Bonus Software.
The Stylus Color 440 (£232) designed for the first-time home user offers 720x720dpi resolution in both colour and mono, and utilises a dual cartridge system. The Stylus Color 440 incorporates many of the enhancements of the Stylus Color 640, with the focus on ease-of-use, such as the introduction of On-line User Documentation featuring a Set-up Guide, in addition to the usual hard copy manuals.
To further assist first time users the Stylus Color 440 includes a new PerfectPicture Pak software bundle, including Corel Print House Magic 3 and Professor Franklin's Instant Photo Effects; and a Bonus Media Pack.
* PerfectPicture Imaging System is made up of:
- Epson MicroPiezo technology
- Epson Quick-dry inks
- Epson AcuPhoto Halftoning
- Epson Photoquality Paper

Epson ADVANCES DOT MATRIX MARKET WITH TWO NEW IMPACT PRINTERS
Epson (UK) Ltd, the market leaders in impact printing, has announced two new dot matrix printers - the DFX-8500 and the FX-2180. Ideal for a range of user applications that require low-cost, high-volume output, these new devices offer the ultimate in reliability, durability and speed along with superior paper handling and enhanced connectivity options.
The DFX-8500, a replacement of the DFX-8000, is Epson's newest top-of-the-line printer and is ideal for businesses that depend on a high-volume printer for day-in, day-out output, such as reports, spreadsheets, and invoices. This industrial-strength workhorse, is a 9-pin wide-carriage impact printer that delivers high-speed performance at up to 1,120 characters per second (cps) - the fastest in its class.
The DFX-8500, priced at £2699 RRP ex. VAT, incorporates Epson's interface slot allowing for internal connectivity solutions for Ethernet, Twinax and Coax environments. In addition, the DFX-8500 offers users advanced paper handling options, including support for up to seven-part forms, automatic form thickness adjustment, a re-designed perforation cutter to allow for more precise automated paper cutting, Top-of-Form memory, and Short Tear-Off.
"Dot matrix printing is not a thing of the past. In 1997, we introduced two new impact printers to a very receptive marketplace and have improved upon those introductions with these new announcements," said Andrew Semple, Epson UK's Dot Matrix Product Manager. "We remain extremely committed to this market and offer the broadest line of 9 and 24-pin impact printers available today."
Designed to meet a variety of user needs, the FX-2180 is a high-speed (up to 500 cps), wide-format device. Replacing the FX-2170, the FX-2180 is the ideal solution for users who need a reliable, low-cost output printer for reports, multi-part forms and labels.

Epson TARGETS ULTRA PORTABLE MARKET WITH THE EMP-5500
- the brightest slimmest Ultra portable LCD projector on the market
Epson UK Ltd today announces the addition of an Ultra portable, super compact, high bright, fully featured projector for mobile presenters, to its market leading range of projectors.
The EMP-5500 is a true SVGA resolution projector, utilising second-generation Balanced Image Size conversion technology for VGA and XGA display. Weighing only 4.2Kg, with a strong, lightweight polycarbonate casing, and only 85mm high (excluding foot) with an A4 footprint, the EMP-5500 is a truly personal portable projector.
In response to market demand for brighter, more portable projectors, the EMP-5500 features Epson's 0.9" Ultra High Aperture Polysilicon TFT LCD Panels, in conjunction with Polarisation Conversion Technology and a high bright 120W Ultra High Power lamp, to achieve a high bright 650 ANSI lumens.
"Epson's expansion into the ultra portable market proves our commitment to all segments of the market," said Clare Stimson, Epson UK's LCD Projectors Product Manager. "The EMP-5500's lightweight, compact construction, high brightness and optional portable screen make the EMP-5500 the ideal solution for presenters on the move. In particular the EMP-5500 is suitable for sales representatives and training companies who constantly need high quality presentation facilities."
The EMP-5500 features the Advanced Auto Setup function, which automatically adjusts the tracking, synchronisation and centring after powering on or changing input sources. If required the presenter can make further adjustments to the display, with the new On Screen menu with Functional Icon. This new projector supports NTSC 4.43, M-PAL, and N-PAL, in addition to NTSC 3.58, PAL and SECAM video formats.
The presentation environment is also an extremely important factor, which is why Epson is offering a Portable Screen option, priced at £279. The two in-built 1W speakers with 3D SRSä stereo surround sound technology ensures that any audio enhancement can be heard by an audience up to approximately 50 people. External connectivity is also available for larger auditoriums. In addition, the optional 50" portable screen with its own soft carry case means the presenter does not need to be concerned about display facilities.
The EMP-5500 will be available in September and will be priced at £4095 RRP ex. VAT, including a Soft Carry Case, all necessary cables and remote control.
