The search is on to find the UK's 'Most Typical Family'
In a move to highlight how interesting and diverse British family life is, Epson, the world's leading digital imaging company, is launching a nationwide search to find the UK's most typical family to star as the The Epson Family. This will see an otherwise unknown British family propelled to superstardom. This unique social experiment will see them go from being anonymous to being one of the most recognised families on the web. In the space of just 100 days they will become the stars of their very own global show. Families that are interested in staring in their very own show can enter for a chance to win at, www.the-Epson-family.com.
Epson will also be scouring the length and breadth of Britain looking for the UK's most typical family who will be thrust into the public eye, reminiscent of the massive hit movie The Truman Show. Once selected, the winners will go on to be the stars of The Epson Family , an online channel following the family's every move from the time they wake up until the time they go to bed. It will cover every moment in their family life from Sunday lunch through to even a potential wedding. Their lives will be publicly documented via a continuous stream of photographs and images that will constantly be uploaded and updated throughout the 100 days, starting in March 2004.
The chance of instant fame and recognition doesn't stop there. The winning family will go on to appear in a national advertising campaign for Epson and be the subjects of a high profile photographic exhibition at one of London's leading galleries; documenting '100 days in the life of the UK's most famous family. The exhibition will mark the end of the show and will be launched at a VIP celebrity party with the Epson Family taking centre stage.
In addition to receiving £11,250 (the UK's typical wage for a 100 day period*) and a contribution from Epson to the charity of their choice, the winning family will be kitted out with the latest state of the art digital cameras, printers, scanners and projectors, courtesy of Epson, that will enable them to capture key moments of their lives and relay them instantly to their adoring fan base via their Epson family online channel. A host of professional photographers and journalists will be visiting the Epson Family house during the 100 days to help them capture key moments in their 'typical life'.
Jane F.A. Barnard, Marketing Communications Manager for Epson said:
"We anticipate that the Epson family could become an international phenomenon. We want to prove once and for all that when it comes to UK family life, there is actually no such thing as a typical family, as all families experience unique and exciting moments throughout their lives".
The search for families to take part in the show begins today. Families who think they are 'typical' and would like to take part, are invited to visit a dedicated website: www.the-Epson-family.com and send in a family snapshot together with a few details of why they believe their family to be the most typical family in the UK.
Additionally, a team of specially appointed Epson scouts will be conducting a nationwide search which will tour the length and breadth of the country from January 2004 to find the UK's most typical family. The search will take in over ten regions stopping at the following locations:
Southampton West Quay Wednesday 7 th January

Epson STRENGTHENS BUSINESSES DIGITAL PRODUCTION CHAIN WITH LAUNCH OF GT-15000
Offering high speed and high-quality scanning, Epson understands the needs of businesses. The Epson GT-15000 is a high speed, 600dpi, A3 colour scanner that provides fast, and excellent quality scans in both colour and monochrome.
November 2003 - High-end and business scanning requirements are quite different to those at the consumer end of the market. Epson understands this and has introduced the GT-15000 into its extensive range of scanners.
The GT-15000 is a high speed, 600dpi, A3 colour scanner that provides fast, and excellent quality scans in both colour and monochrome.
Business users require high-quality images, but this has to be matched with high productivity. Epson's Advanced Scanning Technologies are incorporated into the GT-15000 to ensure that it remains the fastest, highest quality and most powerful scanner in its class. Epson's Advanced Scanning Technologies ensure crisp, sharp text and rich, smooth photo reproduction every time.
The GT-15000 is ideal for businesses that have a high throughput of warehousing, archiving and OCR jobs, while standard 48-bit scanning ensures accurate colour and greyscale image reproduction for in-house publications. If a business can see that they will be doing a lot of multi-page document work, the new 100-sheet Automatic Document Feeder makes light work of the high throughput tasks, allowing speeds of up to 15ppm. This class-leading performance ensures outstanding OCR capabilities and high impact reproduction of everything from photographs and graphics to Web downloads, spreadsheets and in-house publications.
In addition the GT-15000 offers enhanced connectivity with the inclusion of the three fastest PC connection methods - USB 2.0 Hi-Speed, SCSI and optional IEEE 1394 for faster data transfer and improved productivity. The GT-15000 can also be networked, with the Network Image Express Card - a new hardware interface for Epson professional scanners. This feature ensures that the GT-15000 is efficiently utilised. Not everyone within a business uses a scanner everyday, so it is important that the scanner has excellent connectivity and can be easily accessed across a network. This ensures that businesses really make the most of their investment.

Epson® unveils revolutionary image restoration system in new scanner - Perfection 4870 Photo
Pioneering image technology within the Perfection 4870 Photo keeps Epson in sharp focus. This high performance flatbed scanner for the photography or graphics professional offers the power and quality of a film scanner with the flexibility of a flatbed, all without sacrificing the scan quality.
12 th November 2003 - Due to be launched on 1 st February 2004, Epson's Perfection 4870 Photo scanner brings groundbreaking DIGITAL ICE Technology to the graphics or photography professional. The Perfection 4870 Photo has an optical resolution of 4800 x 9600dpi - the highest in its class - which allows a 35mm piece of film to be enlarged to 60cm x80cm [A1]. By coupling this vast resolution with a moving TPU (transparency unit) lamp, Epson's newest flatbed scanner not only challenges the traditional film scanner manufacturers on quality, but also on price.
Epson makes technological advancements with the inclusion of the DIGITAL ICE Technology allowing film and prints to be scanned for reprinting, archiving, enlargement and picture restoration, without compromising on quality. The scanners' high resolution produces unrivalled results from both photo and transparent media. The Perfection 4870 Photo is so powerful that the grain of the film can be detected when scanning at high resolutions. Available in the Professional Mode, Grain Reduction acts as a multi-level diffuser that blends the grain allowing you to scan small areas for enlargement. Sometimes the grain is desired, so the user is left with the final artistic decision to use it or not.
The award-winning DIGITAL ICE Technology automatically removes surface defects such as dust and scratches from a scanned image. DIGITAL ICE Technology differentiates itself from software only solutions because it does not soften, blur or otherwise alter any underlying details or composition of the original image. Instead, the patented DIGITAL ICE Technology works from within the scanner during the scanning process to provide the user with a clear, authentic base image that improves the original image. The user does not need to learn or install any additional software to make the DIGITAL ICE Technology work.
The DIGITAL ICE Photo Print Technology within the Perfection 4870 Photo works by utilising two light sources (see editors notes), reflecting on the image from different directions. DIGITAL ICE Photo Print Technology uses a defect map to identify the precise locations of physical defects, or visual "noise" on a print being scanned. Differential shadowing technology and proprietary software algorithms quickly and automatically eliminate the unwanted defects, producing a scanned image file that improves upon the original print. DIGITAL ICE Photo Print Technology is designed to remove dust and lint, while also correcting scratches, cracks, rips, and creases found on the surface of most prints.
"Before the Perfection 4870 Photo, users wanting professional quality photo restoration really had only one option - expensive film scanners. The Perfection 4870 Photo breaks the mould with its innovative blending of film scanner features and flatbed flexibility," says Richard Baylis, Sales and Marketing Manager for Consumer Products, Epson UK.
To cater for every professionals need, the Perfection 4870 Photo has remarkable optical density of 3.8DMax, which is unrivalled in this class. The 3.8DMax optical density enables the scanner to detect the data lost by most other scanners in extreme highlight and shadow areas. The 3.8DMax figure is actual , not a mathematical theory, and will allow the professional photographer to get the most from their images.
The scanner's powerful USB 2.0 Hi-Speed and IEEE 1394 FireWire interfaces produce fast and accurate scans. The professional-level SilverFast SE6 scanning and imaging software add a whole host of graphical benefits such as selective colour correction and NegaFix® negative film optimiser; and Epson's very own Colour Restoration system and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 complete the comprehensive Perfection 4870 Photo package.

Epson® brings high quality imaging to the education sector
With the very latest in imaging technology, the Epson EMP-54 and EMP-74 deliver high quality performance and features aimed specifically at the education industry.
November 2003 : The EMP-54 and EMP-74 extend Epson's popular range of projectors. Both units offer greater flexibility, intuitive operation and low total cost of ownership.
Both the EMP-54 and EMP-74 feature a range of colour modes to suit any type of screen, including Blackboard mode. This colour mode, unique to Epson's range of projectors, automatically corrects the colour saturation of the projected images making it easy to present on a blackboard for use by lecturers and teachers.
For improved connectivity, both projectors come with two input interfaces for connecting different computers to the projector. Users can then switch between the two inputs via the remote control or directly from the projector.
The Brightness Control function on the EMP-54 and EMP-74 ensures excellent output irrespective of the environment. In High Brightness mode, the projectors produce 2,000 ANSI lumens, suitable for high ambient light conditions. In "Economy Mode" the output is 1,500 ANSI lumens. This makes them suitable for using with interactive whiteboards and also uses less power. In this mode both projectors provide up to 3000 hours lamp life, ensuring lower running costs.
The EMP-54 and EMP-74 also come with Auto Keystone Correction, which means that even if the projector is angled up or down to position the image on the screen, the geometry will automatically be corrected, producing perfectly square images. Combined with a Short Throw Lens, which will project a 60" screen from just 180cm, these latest projectors can be placed in virtually any environment or position with no loss of quality.
For additional flexibility both projectors feature a range of security modes to protect the settings from tampering and to deter theft. They also offer complete functionality from a remote control, as well an intelligent HELP function, which automatically troubleshoots operating issues and corrects errors.
