Print operation is slow or unresponsive with Adobe Photoshop CS4 or CS5. Does the issue lie with the application or the printer software?

If you encounter any of the following problems when using your printer with Photoshop CS4 and CS5, the first step is to identify if you are only experiencing a problem printing from Photoshop or when printing from a different application:
Photoshop or the Epson printer driver freezes, 'hangs' or quits unexpectedly.
Printing is slow, unresponsive.
Slow redrawing of windows, UI around windows and/or tiling of windows.
Adobe has published support article 84020, "Photoshop CS5 known issues" which includes a specific section titled "Performance" that discusses issues in both Mac OS X and Windows and steps to make significant improvements.
