Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive

As a producer Epson (UK) Ltd. fully supports this directive and what it is trying to achieve. For details please see below links:

The purpose of the directive is to:-
  • Reduce the amount of WEEE sent to landfill
  • Promote the separate collection, treatment & recycling of WEEE
  • Ensure the safe treatment and disposal of hazardous components
  • Encourage producers to make products easier to recycle

Key dates
The regulations came into force on 2nd January 2007.
Producers had to join a compliance scheme by 15th March 2007.
Producers have to mark electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) by 1st April 2007.
Full responsibility for treating and recycling household WEEE begins on 1st July 2007.

The EU directive on Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations place a range of legal obligations on producers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), including the collection and recycling of WEEE.

Businesses obligated by the WEEE regulations will be:
  • Manufacturers of EEE selling under their own brand
  • Brand owners of EEE manufactured by others
  • Importers of EEE.
What is WEEE?
There are ten categories of EEE covered by the regulations.
  • Category 1 - Large Household Appliances
  • Category 2 - Small Household Appliances
  • Category 3 - IT & Telecoms Equipment
  • Category 4 - Consumer Equipment
  • Category 5 - Lighting Equipment
  • Category 6 - Electrical & Electronic Tools
  • Category 7 - Toys, Leisure & Sports Equipment
  • Category 8 - Medical Devices
  • Category 9 - Monitoring & Control Equipment
  • Category 10 - Automatic Dispensers

Epson’s Products fall into 2 of the above categories:

  • 1. Category 3, IT & Telecoms Equipment
  • 2. Category 4, Consumer Equipment

As a producer Epson (UK) Ltd. fully supports this directive and as such has joined several compliance schemes to ensure our responsibilities are fully met in terms of meeting the directive.

1. Household Products (also known as consumer products)
To ensure the correct disposal of your household WEEE return it to your local ‘civic amenity site’, (contact your local authority for details). See the link below where your nearest site can be found.

When purchasing new products speak to your retailer regarding disposal of WEEE. From the civic amenity site Epson’s compliance scheme will ensure that the product is collected, treated and recycled in such a way that all the directive’s terms are met.

2. Non Household Products (also known as business products)
For products generally used in the office environment Epson are working with our compliance scheme to devise the most appropriate system for collecting WEEE from business’s In this category there are two different processes:

Equipment purchased after August 2005
This equipment is recognisable by the ‘wheelie bin’ logo on the product.

With this product Epson will arrange safe disposal of the product at the end of its life.

We will update this website as we clarify our proposed collection & recycling programme for business users.

  • 1. Serial number of newly purchased product
  • 2. Product to be collected
  • 3. Serial number of product to be collected
  • 4. Approx weight of product to be be collected

Equipment purchased before August 2005.
This equipment can be recognised by the lack of this ‘wheelie bin’ logo

Having purchased new equipment from Epson to replace equipment that pre-dates August 2005, Epson will handle the safe disposal of the old equipment regardless of brand.

For now please can you contact DHL on the telephone number below where you will be asked to provide a few details to enable us to arrange collection
  • 1. Serial number of newly purchased product
  • 2. Product to be collected
  • 3. Serial number of product to be collected
  • 4. Approx weight of product to be be collected

If new equipment is not being replaced the end-user is responsible for disposal through their normal channels of disposal.

3. ‘Buy Epson’ Internet Sales
If you intend to buy or have purchased equipment from our own Internet site, your old equipment can be returned to your local ‘civic amenity’ site

Part of the costs of our membership of the ‘Distributor Take Back Scheme’ have been allocated to providing extra facilities at selected civic amenity sites to cope with the, separate collection, treatment & recycling of WEEE. Our compliance scheme will then transport that WEEE to ‘Authorised Treatment Facilities’ ensuring correct recycling of the product
