Adobe Photoshop CS5 does not show my scanner or All-In-One in the File > Import menu on my 64-bit version of Windows. What's wrong?

RELATES TO:

  • 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows (x64).
  • Adobe Photoshop CS5
  • Scanning functionality - importing to Photoshop
  • Epson Scanner and All-In-One ranges

EXPLANATION:

Adobe Photoshop CS5 requires a TWAIN plug-in order to recognise your scanner and enable you to select it in the File > Import menu. However, in Microsoft Windows TWAIN is available as a 32-bit version only and therefore cannot be used directly in CS5 64-bit.

Alternatives and workarounds

You may wish to use the following alternative methods of scanning into 64-bit editions of Adobe Photoshop CS5.

  • Use Epson Scan to scan and save your images to your hard drive, and then open them in CS5. We recommend saving your images as TIFF files since they offer better compatibility and TIFF is a lossless file format (i.e. image data is not lost). For help refer to your user's guide (available from the Epson website) or the following related article: How to perform a basic scan with EPSON Scan.

  • Use the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) from the File > Import menu to import images from the scanner.

    Notes Icon Note:

The WIA driver does not offer all the features and control provided by the Epson Scan driver. It also does not support scanner options such as a Transparency Unit (TPU) for film scanning or an Auto Document Feeder.

  • Download and install the 32-bit TWAIN plug-in, and run CS5 in 32-bit mode. In 32-bit mode you will be able to scan using the File > Import menu. You can then save the file and reopen it in Photoshop CS5 64-bit.

    Note:

For information on downloading TWAIN 32-bit and running CS5 in 32-bit mode, refer to the TechNote article below on the official Adobe website:
