Addressing the route causes of global warming
Our Environmental Vision lays out our aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% across the lifecycle of all products and services by the year 2050.
The focus on C02 is understandable, as it is regarded as the primary cause of global warming, but there are other substances causing even greater environmental impact that shouldn't be ignored.
It's not just about CO2
Perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfurhexafluoride (SF6), greenhouse gases used for cleaning and etching processes in semiconductor and liquid crystal display manufacturing are two substances that are on our radar.
Taking this into account, we have initiatives to reduce global emissions of greenhouse gases other than CO2 as well as reducing CO2 emissions by conserving energy.
What are we doing to make a difference
To cut our CO2 emissions, for example, we are improving monitoring and controls, and increasing the energy efficiency of our plant facilities and production equipment. We're also innovating our production processes and introducing new energy sources.
Setting and meeting our goals
In 2008 we reduced our global warming emissions by 12% to 807, 000 tons CO2. On a per unit of sales basis, Epson's emissions of global warming substances showed a consolidated global reduction of 51%, compared with fiscal year 1990 levels, against the target 50% reduction and a decrease in energy use within Japan of 43% (target was 35%).
